6:45 pm: Docomomo Talk on Geneva Village in Littleton

June 12, 2024

Eugene Sternberg: Building Community
Where: Littleton Learning Lab, 5524 S Prince St, Littleton, CO 80120.  Free parking is available in the lot adjacent to the building or on Prince street, or in the City of Littleton parking lot.    PLEASE do not park on the street entering the Geneva Village Community.
On June 12th, join Docomomo in a discussion about what building a community means in terms of Architecture, highlighting one of Denver’s most prolific architects - Eugene Sternberg. You may know a few of his contributions… Denver General Hospital, National Jewish Hospital, the Arapahoe Acres neighborhood – and the subject of this talk, Geneva Village retirement community - currently in danger of redevelopment at the heart of Littleton.
In his time, Eugene proposed “radical” new community designs of culture de sacs, winding residential streets, and houses situated to encourage community but also provide privacy – with large lots and plenty of windows for light and views.
With recent development conversations revolving around affordable housing, apartment towers with no parking planned, and community input regarding these issues, perhaps we need to look to the past to find the way forward for the future?
Our speakers Josh Robinson and Kimber Dempsey will discuss how Sternberg took his experience planning and rebuilding post WWII Europe and applied it to building incredible communities. His unique vision created a different way of living that still functions as it was intended over half a century later. While Geneva Village’s future is not yet determined, it is important for us to share the high level of design and planning this local community exhibits, acknowledging it’s architectural contribution and how future communities could be developed with better living in mind.

About The Speakers

Josh Robinson is Senior Project Designer at KEPHART Architects, President of Docomomo Colorado, and is known for his talks and activities relating to Modernist architecture across the city and state.  Robinson is also the President of the Ghost Town Club of Colorado, and participates in roles relating to education and preservation of those historic sites. In his free time Josh is restoring a 1955 Modernist home designed by Norton Polivnick in the historic community of Sunset Lanes.

Kimber Dempsey is a realtor specializing in mid-century modern, vintage, and other unique properties.  She is a Colorado native who is immersed in the local market, sitting on the board for Historic Littleton Inc and Docomomo US/Colorado to promote education and preservation of the state’s modern architecture.  As the chair of the Colorado Chapter’s Documentation committee, she applies her personal knowledge and experience of maintaining modern properties.  Her latest projects include a landmark designation for a Bruce Sutherland residence in Littleton, a National Register nomination for South Dahlia Lane, and restoring the Cottle House in Arapaho Hills.
